Wilson had been invited by IWIB director Glenda Papac to come and do a couple of songs at the annual Christmas party for the leading businesswomen’s network.
This year it was held at the new M2 Kitchen cafe in Keira Street run by her two chef/catering sons with international experience Michael and Martin Papac.
When Wilson said he couldn’t come because he presently has a medical condition which means he couldn’t use his fingers well enough to play the guitar, Mrs Papac invited him to come along as a guest to enjoy the evening.
But when the Christmas Party got underway singer Kerry Sweeney said she would find him some backing so he could perform.
And in a true case of you can never keep a good man and musician down, he got up and sang to unfamiliar backing and stole every heart in the room.
The applause was so great he then proceeded to try something else he has never done before and sang his Wollongong song without accompaniment.
It ended with every singing “My Hearts in Wollongong’ and a standing ovation.
Wilson has been battling brain cancer in recent years and has only performed a few times publicly since.
But this was the first time without his faithful guitar and he may be persuaded to do that more because he loves to sing.
“You are all a little kind,” he said after his performance.
