At 7am on Sunday, ambulance crews were called to a house in Bridge Street to treat an 11-year-old boy complaining of a severe headache.
Shortly after the treatment began the boy passed out for around 20 seconds.
Ambulance officers also noticed other members of the family showing similar reactions.
After investigating the house, they found a car with the engine running parked in the garage.
It had been there all night and carbon monoxide fumes had travelled up an internal staircase and into the house where the two adults and two children were sleeping.
Fire and Rescue NSW were called to the house and found exceptionally high readings of carbon monoxide present.
The fire and rescue crew used a large fan to ventilate the house and remove the carbon monoxide fumes, which are odourless and tasteless.
All four members of the family were taken to Wollongong Hospital, where they were in a stable condition later on Sunday.
