With the required run above 10 at the halfway mark, the Lakers’ chase was ignited by Brendan White, who smashed three sixes, as well as four and five wides in the over.
Kookas set a competitive total of 3-165, with opener Scott Peachman (44), No.3 Chris Laudais (36) and middle-order bats Jacob O’Connell (35 not out) and Zac Jurd (30 not out) all made valuable contributions. But in reply, White finished unbeaten on 79, while brother Kerrod, a late inclusion after initially expecting to miss the match because of work commitments, made 35 at the top of the order.
Remarkably, Lake Illawarra won the match with three overs to spare after the slow start.
“We had a lot of work to do, Kookas had kept it tight early on in our innings,” captain Mark Ulcigrai said.
“Thankfully that one big over shifted the momentum for us, we knew we needed to be down to about six an over for the last five. It’s a big week next week, hopefully we can keep it going.”
The Lakers meet The Rail in the one-day final on Sunday, after taking Oak Flats in the last of the Twenty20 matches on Saturday.
The two-day campaign begins in January.
Elsewhere, Gerringong won a nervy showdown with bottom-placed Oak Flats, defending 6-167 and keeping the Rats to 6-158 in reply.
The Rail chased down Shellharbour’s total of 6-149 with five balls to spare. Dylan Rae top scored with 46.
