Skip Anthony Golinski, Peter Sandona (second) and bowls rookie Greg Wray (lead) finished unbeaten on 3wins+12 to clinch the $480 winner’s purse.
“Peter and I have teamed up before but it’s the first time playing with Greg,’’ Golinski said.
“None of us have won a tournament so it’s great to finish as the top side.’’
Greg Wray has been one of the region’s best cricketers, but after 35 years of cricket his body has had enough.
‘’Injuries meant my time was up and in June I took up bowls,’’ Wray said.
“I’m loving it and to win an event after just five months playing is pretty good.’’
Dave Strickland, Derek Jackson and Bruce Evans (skip) were overall runners-up, with Kembla Heights’ Terry McLean, Trevor Munn and Don Barnes (skip) the best of the Round 1 winners and Wiseman Park’s Garry O’Brien, Peter Hodgson and Peter McMurtrie (skip) the top Rd 2 winners.
The Orb are one of Illawarra’s smallest clubs with the Allmen Industrial Services event one of their big days of the year.
“It was fantastic; a huge success,’’ the Orb’s bowls coordinator Des Iggleden said.
