The Illawarra region boasts a large Macedonian population, with many migrating to the area in the 1960s-70s.

They arrived looking for job prospects but brought with them their colourful and proud cultural traditions that include dance, cuisine, language and religion.

In 1984, the Macedonian Welfare Association of NSW Inc (MWANSW) was established for the purpose of assisting the Macedonian community.

“From its humble beginnings and with only one grant, over the years the organisation has grown and diversified,” manager Verica Sajdovska said. “We now provide services to anyone in the broad community who needs assistance regardless of their background.”

The association works to help those in the Illawarra and further afield who have a need stemming from language difficulties, unemployment and ageing.

Many of the services offered are supported by volunteers ranging from administration assistants, volunteer cooks, kitchen hands, activity volunteers, event volunteers, volunteer drivers and on-bus carers. 

“In an attempt to increase our presence in the community through support of the younger generations who are our future, MWANSW is looking into the possibility of forming and supporting the work of Port Kembla Playgroup,” Verica said.  

“We would be establishing and running homework clubs and tutoring programs for primary school aged children as well as school holiday programs and various children’s craft activities.”

The MWANSW has also taken over the management of the Port Kembla Senior Citizens Centre facility and since doing so is happy to report an increase in the centre usage.

There are a number of diverse groups offering a range of activities and programs to the community including dance, exercise, disability cooking and craft classes, social support, aged care, carer and praying groups as well as public workshops and functions such as birthday and engagement parties.

The centre has a hall and meeting room as well as a large commercial kitchen.
