Sandon Point has been awarded the Illawarra junior branch championships, to be held in February, in a major achievement for the club.

The first time Sandon Point has been directly awarded the event, it comes after hosting the past two junior development carnivals.

As many as 50 juniors from the club will compete on the day, against the regions top young surf lifesaving athletes.

“The club is in a good place with nipper numbers as strong as previous years and a good amount of the older nipper kids committing to patrols once they have completed their SRCs and the nipper program,” club president Danny Maddocks said. “It’s attributed to the club being inclusive and welcoming these kids into patrols and trying to make the experience enjoyable.

We have really good people working with these kids from the age managers through to our amazing trainers and facilitators.

Our youth coordinator, Eloise Saddi has so many great ideas and is so enthusiastic in the role. The club is 100 per cent supportive of what Eloise wants to introduce and achieve and the number of kids already involved has increased even at this early stage of the season.

“We welcome any new members that want to contribute and not only will you learn new surf skills you will make new friendships that will last for ever.”

The branch championships announcement comes as Sandon Point took ownership of a new inflatable rescue boat, replacing the previous one bought in 2004, following sponsorship money from local businesses.

“The old boat did a great job but we had to upgrade this year. The boat we have purchased through the fantastic support of the

sponsors is a much needed addition and will give us the opportunity to patrol our beach to the best of our ability and give patrolling members the right equipment to make our beach safe.”

The new boat will be used on all patrols and nippers meeting throughout the surf lifesaving season.
