The season we apparently have to be reminded not to be stupid and use some damn common sense.
It seems we can’t do that on our own.
This time of year, every year, we need warnings from local politicians or government departments on templated press releases warning us not to be a bloody idiot.
Take for example the warning from NSW Health this week urging swimmers with diarrhoea not to swim in pools? Really?
Has society sunk so low that we really need some government bureaucrat or politician to tell us this.
Really?
Just in case you were wondering, NSW Health’s helpful tips to help avoid us all getting the runs while having a swim this summer included _
- Regularly take children on bathroom breaks
- Ensure children wear waterproof tight pants over swimmers if not toilet trained
- Change nappies in a bathroom and not on the pool deck
- Wash children thoroughly with soap and water before swimming
- Wash hands with soap and water after changing a child's nappy.
For the life of me, I’m not sure how we survived before these press releases started littering the email boxes of newsrooms across the country. Wash your hands after changing a nappy.
Who would have thought of that independently?
Other press release gems that arrive annually at this time of year are the “Dangers of Eating Seafood”, “Safe Christmas Cooking Tips to Avoid Getting Sick”, “Shop Smart Online in the lead-up to Christmas” or “Consumers Urged to Shop Wisely”.
Do us a favour and save our email inboxes this Christmas and just use some good, old fashioned common sense.
