It’s believed the sole occupant lost control of his vehicle around 1:48am near the Kanahooka on ramp, causing the car to flip and roll several times and ejecting its driver from the vehicle.
A motorist who was following him found the man lying on the road and semi-conscious shortly after the incident.
NSW Ambulance Inspector Norm Rees said when arriving at the scene debris could be seen spread over many metres.
“His car is a write-off,” Inspector Rees said. “He’s very, very lucky.”
The victim was treated at the scene then taken to Wollongong Hospital with head and back injuries plus multiple abrasions and lacerations.
On Sunday a hospital spokeswoman said he remained in a stable condition.
