But while French and Japanese are all the rage in terms of HSC subjects, some of the lesser known languages so to speak get left behind.
But not at Smiths Hill High School.
The Illawarra’s only selective high school offers a number of languages for students to study at its Saturday School of Community Languages.
These languages are not available for study through the students’ day schools.
Saturday School of Community Languages assistant supervisor Khaled Elhage said Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Macedonian and Serbian were the languages offered at the centre.
‘’All Year 7 to 12 Students, from government and non-government schools are eligible to attend and at no cost,’’ Mr Elhage said.
He added all of the courses offered at the Saturday School of Community Languages – Smiths Hill Centre were recognised by NESA and students received recognition through their RoSA (Record of School Achievement) and their HSC.
Earlier in December students took the opportunity to showcase their work and talents at the annual Presentation Day.
‘’Parents and the community attended this wonderful day, where students were recognised and acknowledged for their academic achievements,’’ Mr Elhage said.
‘’We had about 150 people turn out to celebrate the day. The drumming performance was particularly popular on the day.’’
Depending on student interest, Hindi, Italian, Korean and Turkish are some other languages that the Saturday School of Community Languages could make available in 2018 and beyond.
