Talbot claimed a spot on the dais in the four-discipline omnium event in Melbourne at the weekend, as well as the frantic madison pairs race with world-class Australian rider Ash Ankudinoff. 

Returning from her second year based in Milwaukee, competing on the US road tour, Talbot will switch back to training for the national road cycling titles in January, before learning if she will chase more track success on the Gold Coast in April.

“I’ve put it all out there, hopefully I’ve done enough,” she said. “But there’s a pretty stacked Australian track team at the moment, there’s a lot of talent, so I just have to wait and see.”

Talbot admitted to being pleasantly surprised with her performance in the omnium, which combines a 10km scratch race, a sprint-based points race, an elimination race and a 20km points race.

Madison teammate Ankudinoff won the omnium gold with 118 points, ahead of South Australia’s Alexandra Manly on 114 and Talbot on 107.

“I expected we’d do well in the madison, Ash is such an accomplished rider and it’s just been great to work with her," she said. 

“But I was never quite sure in the omnium, so many things can happen, but I was quite happy, especially in the elimination, I’ve had a good run with the event lately.”

The long-term vision is forcing her way into the Australian team pursuit squad, with a view to competing at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

“That’s the big goal,” she said. 

And while other sports may be missing world-class quality at the Commonwealth Games, Talbot would face top riders from Britain, New Zealand and Canada.
