The man, aged 29, from Parramatta, walked into Wollongong Police Station on Friday, following a public appeal for information.
After speaking to police he was charged with assault with an act of indecency.
He has been granted conditional bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court on January 23.
Police will allege a woman was indecently assaulted on a train travelling north of Thirroul last month.
The 23-year-old woman boarded a northbound train at Wollongong about 10.50am on November 19.
Police say a man sat beside her somewhere between Thirroul and Waterfall stations, and began touching her thigh area, prompting her to move.
She reported the matter to police the following day.
Police consulted CCTV footage before releasing pictures of a man they believed could assist with their inquiries.
