The group – who is known for hits like Hearts On Fire, Lights And Music and Take Me Over – have just released their fifth studio album Haiku From Zero and touring to promote it.
Guitarist Tim Hoey said it’s been a while since they’ve shown Wollongong some love so is excited to be playing to fans at the Unibar, some of which may have never seen them live before.
“It’s so rare for us to get back to Australia for us to play,” the now New Yorker said. “But the reaction to this record’s been really positive.”
The group began as a solo project of Melbourne DJ and graphic designer Dan Whitford, who was joined by Hoey in 2003 – and later Ben Browning and Mitchell Scott.
Outside of Australia their biggest fan base is the US where both Hoey and Browning live.
“We were just in Mexico the other day where we finished a tour and it was crazy, the fans down there are just insane – it’s so good. You kind of feel like you’re in The Beatles or something, they’re so passionate,” Hoey said.
“It’s such a massive country … you have all the major cities and the college cities and all the towns in between so you can tour there for months on end and play in a diff venue in a different city every day.”
Hoey believes the last decade has been kind to the group and wouldn’t change anything creatively and said his career highlight would be to still have a career.
“It’s not a career than can have a lot of longevity like we’ve seen a lot of friends in bands come and go in such a short amount of time,” he said.
“And five records, having that opportunity is something we’re really grateful about.”
Other gigs set for the Unibar in coming months including ‘90s pop-rockers The Lemonheads, dance trio PNAU and American indie rock group manchester Orchestra.
While Wollongong will also play host to a series of rock concerts such as Jimmy Barnes and Daryl Braithwaite in MacCabe Park, plus John Butler Trio and Bernard Fanning in Stuart Park.
Cut Copy are all back on home soil and touring - stopping at Wollongong Unibar on January 19. Tickets on sale now through www.moshtix.com.au
