According to the OEH’s latest annual air quality statement, the Illawarra joined all regions of the state except for Sydney in recording a combination of “very good”, “good” or “fair” scores for air quality at least 96 per cent of the time.
There were “isolated days of high dust levels and smoke” which affected the result, OEH said.
Sydney, meanwhile, registered just 89 per cent of the time with either “very good”, “good”, or “fair”.
There could be significant differences between “good” and “fair”, but a more detailed view of the statistics is not available until the full statement is released next month.
Illawarra air monitoring stations are located at Kembla Grange, Albion Park and Wollongong.
Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton announced on Thursday that new air quality monitoring stations were being installed in Parramatta, Gunnedah and Narrabri.
