While most of the tournament’s favourites managed to survive the day’s play unscathed, 2010 and 2013 singles champion John Green was eliminated from play in one of the biggest upsets of the day.
Grouped with Mark West, Glen Raymond and Pat O’Neil, Green started the day off well with a big victory over West. However, his tournament was effectively over when he fell to Raymond in the second match of the day. A defeat to O’Neil in the final match made Green’s early exit official. Raymond wound up winning the section 3wins+20 after defeating West in his third match.
While Green was struggling at Figgy, Wiseman Park’s Shane Garvey had a much more comfortable day at Albion Park. Garvey was the first of the favourites to emerge from the day’s play unscathed, defeating Brian Main in a walkover and comfortably accounting for both Vic East and Dugald Braithwaite. Garvey finished the day with 2wins+29.
Two-time defending champion Corey Wedlock was also comfortably through to Sunday’s post sectional play after winning his section 3wins+37. Early in the day, Wedlock accounted for John Hillen and Steve Kerr before finishing off the afternoon with a comfortable victory over Jamie Mitchell.
Warilla youngster Aaron Teys was another of the competition favourites to safely progress through to post sectional play, winning his section 3wins+36.
