A man aged in his 40s was pulled safely ashore after getting out of his depth in a deep channel off Windang.
Lifesaver Kaye Norris was about to depart the beach after a morning on patrol, when she noticed a man being taken out by the current, about 12.30pm Monday.
“At change of tide it’s very dangerous, probably six or seven metres deep. He was sort of heading out into no man’s land, where there’s no people watching.”
Windang Club captain Doug Hockey brought the man to shore using a paddle board.
Surf Life Saving Illawarra’s Anthony Turner said there were at least 22 rescues carried out region-wide on Monday.
At North Wollongong, two males were pulled from the surf before the start of patrols.
At Fairy Meadow a man suffered a shoulder injury after being dumped in the surf.
A 50-year-old man was transported to hospital after a near-drowning at Stanwell Park.
Paramedics also transported a man from North Wollongong Beach with suspected spinal injuries.
“It was one of our busiest days of the season,” Mr Turner said.
“People need to know their limitations and swim between the flags.”
