Mitchell Kambouris and his father Chris Kambouris are determined to continue that tradition as grocers at their Mitchell’s Market stores located at Warilla Grove Shopping Centre and in Ellen Street, Wollongong.
And they plan to continue driving that legacy forward for many years to come as they nurture the family business into 2018 and beyond.
The proud independently owned family run business sees itself as more than your average local grocer.
It employs more than 20 people in Wollongong and Shellharbour and knows looking after its staff is also a key ingredient to keeping its customers satisfied.
When Chris and Mitchell Kambouris decided to move into the grocer market they wanted to nourish the local community with fresh, quality and cost-friendly food. And they wanted to source it from the South Coast. In the process they have become major supporters of locally grown and harvested produce.
Their suppliers include Justin and Renee Camilleri, of Camilleri Hydroponics, who provide specialty lettuce from Jaspers Brush and Pheasants Nest.
Camilleri Hydroponics has been supplying Mitchell’s Markets since Mr Camilleri’s father made that decision while running the business more than 20 years ago.
Calderwood Valley Mushrooms is a 12-year-old business Mitchell’s Markets has supported since it began. It harvests mushrooms daily to help Mitchell’s stock the freshest home grown produce from the field to the shelf within 12 hours.
Other local growers include Chad Hatem, of CNC Hatem, which supplies fresh Lebanese cucumbers. And Nickson Produce delivers locally farmed free-range eggs.
Mitchell Kambouris said the philosophy behind the family run business is remarkably simple.
“The concept was and still is to source the highest quality produce from the paddocks and deliver it fresh to your plate daily,” Mr Kambouris said.
“All we know is quality, fresh food and we won’t sell what we won’t eat.”
Mitchell’s Market understands that in such a cosmopolitan multicultural community as the Illawarra it is important to compliment locally sourced fresh fruit and vegetables with delicacies from around the world.
Mr Kambouris said he and his father pride themselves on providing multicultural tastes and produce that satisfy a wide range of shopping lists.
He said keeping the customer satisfied was particularly important for a business that has developed such a loyal following in recent decades.
