At least 11 restaurants in the Illawarra and South Coast have been awarded chef hats in the Australian Good Food and Travel Guide’s Restaurant Awards.

A look through the list of AGFG’s Australian Best Restaurants for 2018 reveals Caveau, Rookie Eatery and Ruby’s Mount Kembla among the Wollongong restaurants recognised as Chef Hat award winners.
On the Southern Highlands Bistro Officina and Biota, Echalot, Horderns and Katers restaurants are among the recipients.
While down the coast Rick Stein at Bannisters in Mollymook and St Isidore at Milton and The Sandbar Batemans Bay are on the list.
For restauranters such as Daniel Sherley, of Rookie Eatery in Keira Street, the recognition is a great way to start a new year after making so many changes at his 2.5 year old restaurant.
This is Mr Sherley’s first AGFG Chef Hat.
“I'm really excited to have Rookie considered for a chefs hat from AGFG let alone be awarded one,” he said.
“It's been the most humbling and fulfilling three and a bit years for me owning my own restaurant. I am really excited to have our work recognized and we can't wait to build on this and do better again in the future.”
Mr Sherley said he was really happy with the improvements and reaction to the changes he has made during the last 12 months.
“We have made a conscious decision to follow our love for food in the style we are cooking without compromise and it has really paid off. People have loved our take on "panasian" cuisine. We are really excited to take it to the next level as we learn and progress. I have to thank my team in particular my restaurant manager Siobhan who is by my side day after day.”
