Highway Patrol officers attempted to stop a white Commodore on Picton Road about 6.45am, Lake Illawarra Police Chief Inspector Steve Johnson said.
He said a police pursuit was initiated then terminated a short time later as the vehicle drove “at speed” onto the Princes Highway.
The car crashed into a pole on Jamberoo Road about 7am and the driver allegedly fled the vehicle into nearby farmland.
An exclusion zone has been set up with a number of streets closed.
Polair, the dog squad, Highway Patrol officers and general duty police officers were involved in the search. The search was called off about 11.30am.
Chief Inspector Johnson said they don’t believe the vehicle was stolen and making inquiries with the owner of the car to establish who was driving at the time.
