The Bureau of Meteorology issued a harzardous surf warning for the the North Coast and Hunter area on Monday, and has warned that Sydney, the Illawarra and the South Coast will be affected on Tuesday.
Lifeguards closed all Illawarra beaches but North Wollongong and Shellharbour North on Monday, with boaters, swimmers and rock fishers advised to avoid the water.
Surf Life Saving NSW manager Matt du Plessis has urged the public to be aware of the conditions and only swim at patrolled locations.
“Unfortunately we have seen a number of tragic incidents at our beaches during the festive season and with the warmer weather the beach is still just as inviting ever, he said. “If you have any doubt whatsoever about your ability to handle the water it’s better not to go in.”
Despite the week getting off to a cool start, another prolonged period of warm weather – with temperatures into the 30s – is being forecast for the end of the week.
