NSW Maritime executive director Angus Mitchell said the MSC Luisa was ordered back out to sea by Maritime officers after illegally anchoring in Jervis Bay yesterday.
“The vessel was told to leave the area of the marine park immediately after it was discovered there without a permit,” Mr Mitchell said.
“Marine parks are precious areas of coastline which need to be protected from large vessels as they can cause untold damage to delicate marine ecology if they are not anchored in an appropriate area.
“The vessel’s master was also advised he needed to keep the ship at least three nautical miles off the NSW coast until it was ready to dock at its next port of call, believed to be Sydney.
“Roads and Maritime works closely with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority to protect NSW waterways and ensure local and international vessels adhere to strict requirements around safe anchoring in NSW waters.
“The AMSA Rescue Coordination Centre issued the direction to the vessel on behalf of NSW Maritime.”
Substantial fines can apply for vessels which ignore the direction of the harbour master. NSW Maritime will discuss enforcement action with the Marine Park.
