The renowned Wollongong doctor who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2017 was a long time advocate for raising awareness.
In 2018 that is being recognised with the awarding of a Dr Margaret Gardiner Scholarship for Medical Research.
The presentation will be made at the International Women’s Day Illawarra lunch on March 2.
The recipient will be someone working in the area of cancer research and the $2000 will help cover the cost of their studies.
Illawarra’s International Women’s Day Committee decided to create the new scholarship after noting Dr Gardiner’s work in the community as a powerful advocate for cancer awareness.
That started soon after she herself was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000.
She also worked tirelessly over the year to raise funds to help find a cure.
She was Illawarra’s ambassador for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and was often seen sporting her signature pink tutu and pink ribbons at the annual Wollongong Mother’s Day Classic run.
In 2017 that was officially renamed Margaret’s Family Fun ‘n Run/Walk in her honour.
The scholarship is one of six individual scholarships designed to encourage women in the Illawarra community, who might not otherwise have the opportunity, to expand their knowledge, skill and experience in a field of their interest or in which they have shown great potential.
Five of these annual scholarships have been named after inspiring Illawarra women who are sadly no longer with us but have left their mark on the region in the various fields in which they excelled.
There is also a Creative Spirit IWD Scholarship for Women that is inspired by the artistic community of the Illawarra.
It aims to foster upcoming female talent in the field.
These scholarship applications are now open for nominations and close on January 31, 2018.
