The victim, who along with her mother-in-law cannot be named for legal reasons, had been living at the older woman’s house in a suburb in Shellharbour with her three children following the apparent breakdown of her relationship with the woman’s son.
Court documents said there had been tension between both women in the years they’d lived together, resulting in the older woman dosing up on alcohol on top of being prescribed anti-depressants by her doctor.
To add to the strain, in the weeks prior to the incident, the mother-in-law had received a phone call from the Department of Housing saying she was behind in her rent and they would be terminating her lease on the house, which she had held for almost 20 years.
The court heard the mother-in-law was sitting on her front porch drinking a bottle of beer on the afternoon of September 11 last year when she accused her daughter-in-law of not caring for her children because one of her granddaughter’s, who suffers from asthma, was not wearing a jumper.
“You don’t give a shit about your kids, she doesn’t even have a jumper on,” the woman said.
“Why don’t you just f—k off inside cause all you’re doing is being a dickhead, you’re just stirring up shit and I want you to f—k off and leave me alone,” the younger woman replied.
The pair had a short argument before the older woman tried to hit the victim in the head with her beer bottle. The victim managed to block the strike and attempted to hit the woman back, however was restrained by the woman’s partner.
At the same time, the mother-in-law again lashed out with the beer bottle, this time hitting the younger woman on the head and causing a 3-4cm cut, which began to bleed down her face profusely.
The victim was helped by a neighbour and later received medical treatment for her wound.
Meantime, the older woman was arrested, later telling police “she was in my face and I hit her":
She pleaded guilty in court on Wednesday to assault charges.
She was released on bail to face sentencing on March 9.
