The 24-year-old was a passenger inside a car that was pulled over by officers for a random breath test on the Princes Highway about 9.10pm.
Acting Inspector Charles Hutchins, from Wollongong police, said officers were speaking with the female driver when the man got out of the car and ran.
Acting Inspector Hutchins said he scaled a fence and ran along a number of roofs before becoming stuck.
“He’s fallen through the roof and got lodged in a hole for a short period of time,” he said.
“He’s sustained some minor injuries and as a result of that he’s requested for police to get him off the roof.”
The Mercury has been told the man ran around on the roof above The Neurology and Sleep Medicine Specialist Centre, before he fell through the roof of Vanity Rage Boutique.
Officers called in Fire and Rescue NSW crews, with the large ladder platform truck from Wollongong ultimately used to retrieve the man.
Vision seen by the Mercury shows the aerial pumper in action, blocking all lanes of the highway.
The man was taken to Wollongong Hospital, where he was assessed for minor injuries.
Acting Inspector Hutchins said officers were yet to formally speak with the man over the incident, but believed a “medical issue” may have caused him to run.
He said the man hadn’t done anything to prompt action from officers prior to running.
Police investigations are continuing.
