Surf lifesavers, who were on standby to assist with evacuations as bushfires burned in the nearby Royal National Park, were among the emergency service personnel to respond to the incident just before 4pm.
The NSW Ambulance rescue helicopter was called into assist, with the aircraft’s doctor and specialist paramedic winched to the patient.
Paramedics assessed the man on the rock platform at the northern end of the beach. The 36-year-old was treated for a suspected spinal injury, as well as back and rib pain.
His injuries were not life-threatening.
He was then loaded into the helicopter and flown to St George Hospital about 5.20pm.
It is understood the man was rock fishing at the time of the incident.
