The latest crash at the stop-sign-controlled junction of Cowper Street and Illawarra Street happened on Friday, when two cars collided just before 6pm.
Firefighters cut a door from one car to free its driver, an 18-year-old woman.
A 30-year-old woman, who was with a young child in the second car, suffered back pain and whiplash.
A NSW Ambulance spokesman said six patients were ultimately taken to Wollongong Hospital with minor injuries.
Both cars sustained front-end damage in the crash.
A Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) spokeswoman said the NSW government had given Wollongong City Council $480,000 to install traffic lights at the intersection this financial year.
According to data from the NSW Centre for Road Safety*, there were 14 crashes recorded at or within 10 metres of the intersection in the five years to 2016.
The crashes resulted in eight people being injured, including four seriously injured.
A spokesman said the council had developed designs for traffic signals at the site and planned to begin work this year.
The timing would depend on final approval from the RMS, he said.
*The Centre for Road Safety only reports on crashes recorded by NSW Police, in which at least one person was killed or injured, or in which at least one motor vehicle was towed away.
