A number of Rural Fire Service crews from all over the Illawarra converged on an area of bush near Woronora Dam, on Woronora Dam Road.
A helicopter from the nearby Royal National Park fire also responded and was water bombing the fire.
According to the Helensburgh RFS crew, the fire was located by 7pm.
The electrical storm, which moved north, hit the region just after 6pm.
Dozens of lightning strikes hit the area, sparking a number of small fires.
An earlier fire at the Boomerang Golf Course, Maddens Plains, has been extinguished, according to reports.
About 7.10pm, crews were also responding to a fire in Garrawarra State Conservation Area, north of Helensburgh.
Meantime, the NSW RFS has reported that firefighters are gaining the upper hand over the Royal National Park fire.
The park will remain closed tomorrow.
The RFS says it will not issue more major fire updates for the national park fire unless the situation changes.
