Gaze, who is now coach of the Sydney Kings, says it is a sign of respect and he has no problem with the team wearing the heritage singlets.

"I personally don't have a problem with it," Gaze said.

"They're Melbourne United, they're not Melbourne Tigers - they're just paying homage to some of the teams in the past, so I think it's a little bit of a different set of circumstances.

"It still lives on in a very strong way in another form. I have no problem with it, it's gonna be great."

However, there are plans for Carson Ware to don the No.21 singlet, which is meant to be retired in honour of former Tigers player Copeland, who is also a coach at the Kings.

"Wear it for a month, wash it, hang it back in the rafters, I'll say that," Copeland said.

Gaze has no problems with anyone who would potentially want to wear the No.10 singlet for Melbourne United, describing it as a sign of respect.

"I'm not so sure about the whole retiring [the jersey]," he said. "Anyway, it's nice to have it up there, but I don't see a problem if other people wanted to wear the No.10.

"It's still a great respect and I feel honoured that the number has been retired."

The Sydney Kings will play Melbourne United at Qudos Bank Arena on Saturday.
