Kayla Burton was the busiest of the juniors, with the Wests Illawarra junior representing ACT/NSW Country at the under 15 National Championships in Adelaide. The team went through the tournament undefeated, with Burton scoring an important 36 in the grand final victory over South Australia.
The wicketkeeper and opening batter scored 154 runs with an average of 30.8 and took two catches and two stumpings throughout the tournament. She was ultimately rewarded for her performances with selection in the Cricket Australia under 15 Talent Squad.
The Illawarra under 14s travelled north to Armidale in early January to contest the Kookaburra Cup. The competition did not run as planned, with the Illawarra side losing all five matches contested.
However, four players were rewarded for their impressive performances at the tournament with selection in the Country Thunder Southern team that contested the State Challange in late January.
The boys, Andy Magennis, Jonty Clifford, Rhys Cattle & Bailey Leadbitter, performed well in the competition which saw the side play representative teams from Sydney and country NSW.
The Illawarra under 16 team had a tour of their own in January, with the boys travelling to Bathurst for the Bradman Cup.
Like the under 14s, the team struggled against the other country representative teams, however there were a number of standout performances, including Tom Jeffery’s 5/24 against Riverina.
The under 11s, 12s and 13s all travelled for tournaments as well, with the under 11s heading to Newcastle to contest the Ron Arendts Shield. The under 12s travelled to Lismore, winning four from six matches at the Lismore Carnival.
The under 13s finished fourth in the Western Junior Carnival after falling to Blacktown in the bronze medal match.
