The championships saw the best athletes from country NSW descend on Beaton Park for three days of track and field events, with multiple juniors from the region taking home medals.
Nine-year-old William Willis of Athletics Wollongong threw an impressive distance of 6.24 metres to claim gold in the boy’s under 12 shot put event.
Delta Amidzovski was another Wollongong athlete to perform well against older competitors, sweeping the three jumps events on the way to a five medal haul. The 11-year-old cleared a height of 1.52m to win the under 13 girl’s high jump and jumped 9.85m in the under 14 triple jump.
Amidzovski added to her medal tally with gold in the under 13 long jump and 80m hurdles, and silver in the under 13 200m sprint.
Teammate Chelsea Ezeoke claimed the 200m race, one of five gold medals she won across the weekend.
Kembla Joggers juniors were not to miss out on the action either, with Grace Pomery, Jordyn Martin and Calany Meyers securing a Kembla Joggers lockout of the podium in the girl’s under 14 1500m event. Isaac Shaw won the boy’s under 15 1500m race, with Olivia Sivills claiming the girl’s under 15 1500m.
The Illawarra Blue Stars were also well represented throughout the weekend, with Charlotte Smith winning the girl’s under 14 javelin and hammer throw events. Cohen Deegan also exhibited his prowess in the throwing events, claiming the boy’s under 14 hammer throw gold medal.
While the contest for medals was extremely fierce, there was a secondary goal on the mind of many athletes. A number of juniors were desperately seeking qualifying standards for the upcoming Australian Championships.
Ashlyn Adams of Illawarra Blue Stars ran second with a time of 32.23 in the girl’s under 15 200m hurdles. Adams achieved the qualifying time for March’s junior nationals by just 0.01 of a second.
