Held at Bellambi beach, the event provided a more relaxed atmosphere to ease registered nippers into the competitive side of surf lifesaving.
“It wasn’t a medal or championship event,” Keving Starling of Surf Lifesaving Illawarra said. “It was an open event with a more relaxed environment and we were hoping to attract kids from clubs that don’t normally compete. We had a few clubs we don’t normally see at our events who brought along 15 to 20 kids, which was great to see.”
“Walking around the beach, people were enjoying themselves. Bellambi ran a very good event, they were well organised.”
The next event on the Illawarra nippers calendar is the Illawarra Branch Championships on the 10th and 11th of February and Starling is confident many of last weekend’s athletes will return.
