Neurosurgery is the surgical treatment of disorders affecting the brain, spinal cord and the nerves. The symptoms of these conditions range from simple headache, neck or back pain to weakness or numbness (stroke), seizures and coma.
To name a few, the common brain conditions and notable examples that neurosurgeons manage are: brain tumours (benign or malignant), brain haemorrhage or blood clots including aneurysms, head injury, fluid accumulation in the brain (hydrocephalus), infections in brain including abscess, pain including trigeminal neuralgia, etc.
The common nerve problems treated by neurosurgeons are freeing up pinched nerves anywhere in the body such as carpal tunnel syndrome and nerve tumours.
The common spine operations on the cervical (neck), thoracic (chest) and lumbar (lower back) regions of spine are, for ruptured disc (microdiscectomy), decompression of pinched nerves (laminectomy), stabilisation of spine (spine fusion) including for fractures, tumours, blood clots and infections.

Dr Ravi Kumar Cherukuri from Seaview Clinic operates on the brain, spine and nerves for all these conditions and more.
“My speciality interest is minimally invasive neurosurgery where operations are performed with precision with minimal tissue damage incorporating various advances in instrumentation, equipment and computer assisted navigation,” Dr Cherukuri said. “This achieves the best results with minimal damage to normal tissue.
“My other interests are endoscopic surgery for treatment of brain tumours, cysts and hydrocephalus plus microvascular surgery for aneurysms, etc.
Various technologies complement the skill of a neurosurgeon to achieve the best outcome for the patient include magnification, illumination, precision with computer navigation, intra-operative nerve/brain monitoring and imaging.
“To name a few, operating microscope for micro neurosurgery, endoscopic surgery including removing a brain tumour through the nose, neuronavigation, which is like a GPS in the brain to reach the target with precision, robotic surgery of the spine used in spine fusion to insert the hardware for spine stabilisation with enhanced accuracy, and other advanced technology.
“I started as a neurosurgical trainee in 1987 and have been a consultant neurosurgeon since 1993, further enhancing my neurosurgical training and working at various neurosurgical institutions in USA, UK and India. I started as a consultant neurosurgeon in 2004 at Wollongong Hospital and Wollongong Private Hospital and call this city my home.”
