The new program, set to commence in March, will see girls aged 14 to 16 complete regular training sessions focusing on skill development, engage in off-field education programs and compete in the newly-launched Academy Games. The program is an endorsed AFL NSW pathway.
Stanton believes the program is an indication of how seriously the AFL is taking the women’s game.
“As a female I’ve never felt like I’ve been held back,” the former GWS Giant said. “But I think sport is that one field where I felt like I couldn’t achieve as much as my potential could have allowed. For girls now to have these pathways to reach their potential in sport is really exciting.
“We had nothing like this when I was growing up. Imagine what girls my age could have achieved with something like this. For girls in the next generation to have this, they’re going to accomplish so much more than we ever have, so it’s really exciting.”
IAS CEO John Armstrong hailed the program as yet another opportunity for female athletes in the region to excel at their chosen sport.
“This is a program specifically for the under 16s age category,” Armstrong said. “It is primarily about skill-based development, but will incorporate some competition opportunities at the soon to become Academy Games.
“Without question the opportunity for women’s development within the Illawarra region is really important. The AFL has done a fantastic job in setting up these academy programs throughout the 11 regional academies throughout the state.
“Within the space of one year we will have talented athletes developed in quality skill development emerging and within two to three years you will see these girls playing in the AFL Women’s league.”
Registations for the program close on March 6, with trials to be held on Wednesday March 7 at Bonaira Oval.
