But a cockatoo caught in a tree at Kiama needed a bit of help on Friday evening.
Emergency services personnel – including a cop-or-two – were called in to rescue the bird, which had become tangled in fishing line and couldn’t escape.
Illawarra Police Rescue Squad officers and Kiama SES volunteers responded to the call out near Kendalls beach.
A police rescue officer climbed a ladder, then the tree, to reach the branch the bird was trapped on.
The branch was cut and lowered to other emergency services personnel.
The officers were able to remove the fishing line “without losing any fingers”, according to a post on the Illawarra Police Rescue Squad’s Facebook page.
Once the bird had been freed, it was able to fly away and did not appear to be injured.
