Cheleas Ezeoke has headlined a succssful weekend for Illawarra athletes at the NSW Junior Athletics Championships.
The 12-year-old extended her recent run of impressive performances with victory in the under 14 girls 100 metre, 200m and 400m sprint events. She also finished second in the shot put. Ezeoke ran personal best times in the 200m and 400m events and threw for a PB in the shot put.
The victories come after she won five gold medals and a bronze medal at the recent Country Championships in Wollongong. Ezeoke broke both the 100m and 200m records at the Country Championships. The 100m record had stood since 1975.
Ezeoke’s Athletics Wollongong teammate Delta Amidzovski took home the silver medal in both the under 14 girls 80m hurdles and high jump.
Amidzovski cleared a height of 1.55m in the high jump to finish equal with eventual winner Sophie Paice of Illawong, but was handed the silver medal in a countback.
Maya Boss-Woods of Illawarra Blue Stars also out-jumped her rivals in the high jump, winning gold in the under 15 girls event with a clearance of 1.60m.
The boys also had a successful weekend, with a number of Kembla Joggers runners taking home medals in the middle and long distance events.
Tayne Ward finished second in the under 14 boys 1500m race with a time of 4.43.66. The silver medal came after Ward won gold in the 3000m race earlier in the competition.
Ward blitzed his rivals to claim a comfortable win in a time of 9.55.22. Kembla Joggers teammate Joel Offord took home the bronze medal in the race.
15-year-old James Healey finished third in the under 16 boys 800m event, with a time of 2.03.39 on Saturday before contesting the 1500m on Sunday. The 1500m race went down to the wire, with Healey finishing just 0.43 seconds behind winner Joshua Atkinson.
Isaac Shaw, also of Kembla Joggers, took out the under 15s 2000m steeplechase in a time of 7.01.62.
