The list 25 things Wollongong needs now –which included Ikea and a street racing circuit around North Beach – was met with a positive response from residents who were eager to share their own hopes and dreams for the city.
More than 500 people told us what they think Wollongong needs now, and we’ve pulled together a sample of those suggestions below.
Other suggestions included ...
- Liberal Government members of parliament
- Convention centre including 10,000-seat stadium for indoor sports - Hawks, ice hockey, olympic qualifiers - volleyball, weightlifting, table tennis, etc
- Motorcycle speedway venue with quality competition
- A massive upgrade of suburban facilities, not just in the 2500 postcode.
- Footpaths
- Another motorcross and enduro track
- A good dumpling restaurant
- Turn Regent Cinema back into a cinema and also protect its unique and historical design.
- More music concerts and theatre, better restaurants.
- Solve Corrimal Street traffic and improve pedestrian flow from Crown Street Mall to city beach (tram is one solution)
- A road through Crown Street Mall
- F6 extension to Sydney
- Officeworks and a big Spotlight store in Shellharbour
- Escape tours
- Aldi in Thirroul
- Palace Cinemas
- P&O cruise departing from Wollongong
- More selective high schools
- Expand regional airport
- Brand new cinema complex and indie/foreign film cinema.
- A pier at Flagstaff Hill big enough for cruise ships to berth
- A cheap flight industry to directly compete with Sydney. Cheap parking and cheaper flights would bring punters down to the Gong and create new jobs.
- A Centennial Park
- Peace and quiet and less crowds
- Some planning for the area
