The 36-year-old enters the competition on the back of a victory at the recent Burleigh Pro and he will line up alongside Kasey Hargreaves, Darcy de Clouett, Tim Bilmon and Rod Morgan as the club fights for a share in over $100,000 in prizemoney and the right to be named Australia’s best surfing club.
President Christian de Clouett said the competition provides the club’s riders with a unique opportunity to compete as a team against the country’s best surfers.
“It’s a great competition,” de Clouett said. “Surfing’s such an individual sport, it’s good to get together as a team to compete for a bigger goal as a club. This competition is always good fun, there’s a lot of camaraderie between the guys.
“It’s a celebration of Australian surfing. To be able to go up there and be among Australia’s best boardriding clubs and throw your hat in the ring is great exposure, it puts belief into the club.”
The competition will feature a who’s who of Australian surfing, with south coast world champion Tyler Wright to line up alongside brothers Owen and Mikey for Culburra.
The chance to compete with world champions is what makes the competition so special, according to de Clouett.
“It’s a huge honour to be able to surf out there with a world champion,” He said. “It’s just great experience for younger surfers. They’ll benefit from being out there and watching a world champion, how they prepare, make the right decisions at the right moment. That’s the thing our competitors can learn the most, watching the pros go about their job.”
Scarborough qualified for the event by winning the Southern Regional Qualifying Event and while the club may not boast the big names many of their rivals possess, de Clouett is confident his surfers can cause an upset and improve on last year’s result.
“In these team events, you can have the best team on paper and not go overly well, sometimes you can have an average looking team on paper and get it together. It comes down to the basics, wave selection and time management. I think we’ve got the firepower to match it with the bigger clubs, we’ve just got to get it right on the day.
“We’ve changed the team structure a little bit from last year. We have the same core few guys that have been there before, but we’ve learnt some lessons as well.
At 36, Squiers has experienced a career resurgence in recent months, taking out the Burleigh Pro on the Gold Coast and de Clouett has been impressed by the renewed focus he’s seen from the journeyman.
“He’s planning to give the Qualifying Series a real crack this year and it’s good to see. He’s totally got the right focus and abilities to give it a go and try to get there.”
The competition will be broadcast live on both Fox Sports and Channel Nine’s GO! channel, with GO! to broadcast the final events from 1pm on Sunday.
