Chief Inspector Steve Johnson, from Lake Illawarra police, said officers attempted to stop a champagne-coloured Subaru Forester on the Princes Highway in Unanderra about 8.15am.
The vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated.
“The pursuit was terminated a short time later and police conducted a search for the vehicle,” Inspector Johnson said.
The search – which was conducted in the Warrawong, Lake Heights, Unanderra and Cringila area – involved highway patrol and general duties police officers, as well as the Polair helicopter.
The car was last seen on the highway, where the pursuit ended.
It has not yet been found.
Anyone who sees the car should contact Lake Illawarra police station on 4232 5599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Inspector Johnson said there was no connection between the pursuit and the fatal shooting of a man in Unanderra during the early hours of Wednesday morning.
