For more than 2500 years, yoga has been recognised for its system of philosophies, principles and practices.
Originating in India, the practice of yoga is just as relevant today as it was those many thousands of years ago.
Through physical, emotional, mental and social realms, regular practise of yoga’s many different techniques can be of great benefit. The postures and movements, breathing exercises, relaxation and concentration, self-inquiry and meditation help to achieve a more balanced and peaceful way of life.
It is for this reason that yoga is so popular in our fast-paced world. It allows for time to step outside of our daily rituals into one that has been practised for many years by devout followers.
The great aspect of yoga is that people of all ages and all levels of fitness can find a class that suits them. It’s important, however, to ensure your teacher is experienced and properly trained so they can expertly guide you to work at your level.
In yoga the body, breath and mind are treated as a union. Yoga can teach you to experience that union which can lead to a sense of peace, calmness and clarity of the mind while toning and exercising the body.

There are many different options from the different styles of classes so choose one that suits your needs.
Hatha yoga is a generic term for the postures and a general yoga class while Ashtanga is similar to the very popular Vinyasa yoga. It is fast-paced and can be rigorous for those who want a good work out.
Bikram yoga involves working through a series of 26 poses in a heated environment. It is very popular among those wanting to work up a sweat but you need to find a good practitioner of this form of yoga to ensure you are being correctly guided through the poses while staying hydrated. Another form of Bikram is known as Hot Yoga which deviates from the original poses.
Iyengar is a meticulous style of yoga which focuses on alignment and the proper implementation of each pose. Props, such as blocks and straps are used and you will notice an increase in heart rate.
Vinyasa translates as “to place in a special way," referring to a sequence of poses. Vinyasa classes are known for their fluid, movement-intensive practices.
Practising yoga, even if it’s just once a week is one of the safest and most useful, cost-effective methods of addressing a range of conditions and life-stages.
The postures, known as “asana” can be challenging but offer an opportunity to reach a goal as you learn and strengthen. Your final destiny is reaching “shavasana” – the moment when the class is over and you can rest peacefully and enjoy your achievement on your mat.
