Fire crews were called to a blaze at a heritage-listed house on Croome Road, near the BMX track, in Croom about 5.40pm.
The Norris Homestead, a dilapidated late-Victorian timber house that has sat vacant since Shellharbour council took possession in 2012, has been destroyed.
Reports from the scene indicated the structure collapsed as the fire took hold.
An image obtained by the Mercury shows the house engulfed in flames.
Crews working in breathing apparatus remain on scene to mop up hot spots.
Meanwhile, firefighters have also responded to a kitchen fire at a single-level house in Barcoo Circuit at nearby Albion Park.
Emergency services were alerted to the second house fire about 6.20pm, however the Mercury understands the blaze had been extinguished by the time they had arrived.
No one was injured in the fire, which damaged the kitchen and three other rooms.
Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Rural Fire Service crews were called to both fires.
