Hayman picked up figures of 7-39 as the Rats were bowled out for 83. Lachlan Hall had three wickets, while Reece Nikitaras top-scored with 50.
Gerringong then quickly claimed first-innings points, with James Barnes (73*) steering the team to 5-183 at stumps.
The dominant day puts Gerringong in firm position to leapfrog a struggling Shellharbour into fourth position. Mitchell Watterson took five wickets for City, but it was not enough to prevent The Rail from reaching 246. Hayden Bagoly scored 93.
The run chase started disastrously for Shellharbour, with the side reduced to 3-9 off just seven overs at stumps. Pushpinder Singh did the damage, with figures of 3-2 off three overs.
Finally, a Scott Peachman (119) century led Kookas to 8-290 at stumps in their clash with Lake Illawarra.
