Three people from two of the cars are to be transported to hospital.
The Mercury understands their injures are relatively minor, including chest abrasions and airbag injuries.
The cars collided about 4.45pm Tuesday.
The crash has caused the closure of one of two northbound lanes, and one of two southbound lanes.
Three other people travelling in another two cars involved in the crash have not required treatment.
The crash has occurred north of Haywards Bay Drive.
Southbound traffic is banked up to the Fowlers Road exit, as at 5.10pm.
Northbound traffic is banked up past Mallee Street.
