The artist produced a giant vector style mural using all the colours of the rainbow as a deterrent for graffiti artists who regularly tag the wall on Bong Bong Road.
The artwork stretched 48 metres in length and more than 7.5 metres high with Jones spending between 10 and 14 hours each day across 11 days to complete it.
“I remember coming out and he had only done snippets on the end … and I thought ‘oh that is so overwhelming’,” his mother Deborah said.
Rotary’s Mick Chamberlain welcomed more public art for the city as he said giant murals deterred graffiti vandals.
The venture was a collaboration between Jones, Dapto Rotary and Wollongong City Council.
The Illawarra has become a breeding ground for giant murals – another recent addition an Indigenous inspired design by Warwick Keen on the side of Wollongong Art Gallery for its 40 year anniversary.
