Police have been told a man, armed with an imitation firearm, entered the King Street servo about 9.40pm.
He approached the counter, threatened the console operator – a 59-year-old man – and demanded cash.
The employee armed himself with a metal pole and the offender left the store.
No one was injured during the incident.
Officers from Lake Illawarra police searched the area with the help of the dog unit. However, they were unsuccessful.
Police would like to speak to a man described as being of Caucasian appearance, between 25 and 30 years of age, about 175cm tall, and of slim build with blue eyes.
He was last seen wearing a dark blue rain jacket, dark blue jeans and black sneakers.
