A southbound sedan and a four-wheel drive travelling north collided on a bend of the Princes Highway at Jerrawangala, about 10km south of the Sussex Inlet Road, just before 5.30am on Friday.
The drivers, who were the sole occupants in their cars, died at the scene.
It is understood the man was a 52-year-old from Ulladulla, while the female driver was aged 30.
Both of the cars came to rest facing the same direction. The four-wheel drive ended up off the road.
The highway reopened to traffic in both directions just after 10.30am, with diversions are the area lifted.
Inspector Ray Stynes, from Nowra police, urged motorists to drive to conditions.
“Please obey the speed limits and drive to conditions especially in the early hours of the morning,” Inspector Stynes said.
“Have some situational awareness around you.”
