A 79th-minute strike from Joseph Champness was all the Jets needed to record their 11th win of the season, which mathematically ensures they cannot drop out of the top six.

But Aloisi was incensed his side was denied what looked a clear penalty in extra time on Saturday.

Nikolai Topor-Stanley appeared to push over Avraam Papdopoulos, whose feet were just inside the Roar's attacking box.

However referee Stephen Lucas waved it away and video assistant referee Chris Beath didn't intervene.

It's understood Beath explained to Roar officials after the match he wasn't sure whether the incident occurred inside or outside the box and thus whether it was an 'obvious error'.

"I don't think it was the VAR's fault. Every single fan in the stadium saw it. Their fans saw it, their players saw it," Aloisi said.

"(Lucas) didn't. What he saw, I don't know. His vision wasn't blocked because I checked.

"Maybe we might get a sorry this week from (FFA)."

Aloisi suggested the officials were "worried" after Jets coach Ernie Merrick gave referees a serve for their performance in their 2-2 draw with Western Sydney.

He also bemoaned assistant referee Ashley Beecham's decision to flag a goal-bound Massimo Maccarone as offside in the second half, saying it was the latest in a long line of presumptive offside calls against the Italian striker this season.

"They tell me (Beecham) was 100 per cent sure. Well then he's not doing his job properly," he said.

"I usually say it evens itself out over the year. It hasn't."

Aloisi didn't want to use any of it as an excuse for the defeat, insisting his side should have scored at least four goals in the enthralling, end-to-end clash.

Returning cult hero Henrique, who earned a huge ovation from the 8120 crowd at Suncorp Stadium, fluffed a golden opportunity for them to take the lead in the 73rd minute.

The Roar had a two-on-one attacking break and all Henrique had to do was lay on a cross for Massimo Maccarone but his pass lacked pace and it was snuffed out.

Until substitute Champness - a former Brisbane youth player - clinically converted a Newcastle counter-attack, it seemed nobody was good enough to convert numerous chances.

However the Jets were marginally the better side and finished with 10 shots on target to the Roar's three.

"John would be disappointed but his team played really well," Merrick said.
