The 52-year-old man was heading south along Glastonbury Avenue around 12:20am when he lost control of his bike while trying to negotiate a left hand bend, according to police.
Wollongong Local Area Command’s Inspector Don Faulds said the vehicle then mounted a kerb before colliding with a wire fence and pole, while shooting the rider some distance away.
“As a result the motorcycle caught alight, a passing motorist has seen the fire and contacted emergency services. A short time later the rider was located down an embankment and he was conveyed to Wollongong Hospital with serious injuries including suspected head trauma,” he said.
The victim is also believed to have sustained multiple fractures to his arms and legs, plus facial injuries.
Inspector Faulds said the cause of the crash is still being investigated. Anyone with information should contact Lake Illawarra Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
