The match ended in a draw, but Kookas held the upper hand across the two days and the defending South Coast premiers will take plenty of positives out of the performance.
Kookas entered the second day at 8-290, adding 19 runs to their total before being bowled out for 309.
Lake Illawarra adopted a defensive mindset with the bat and played for a draw. Kookas had other ideas and Gerard Healey (4-23) nearly led his side to victory.
Ultimately, rain and a stubborn Ryan Maguire (33*) ensured Lake would reach stumps with their unbeaten record intact at 8-122.
“We didn’t get the win, but a draw wasn’t a bad result,” Kookas captain Craig Bramble said. “It keeps us in second place, it’s up to us to beat Shellharbour next week to finish in second and get that home semi-final. It does show us that anything’s possible.”
