Luke Close did not appear in Nowra Local Court on Monday with his solicitor not applying for bail.

No facts were handed up to the court, but charge sheets alleged between 8.30pm on Thursday and 1am on Friday Close murdered Garry James Welch, whose body was found by police at a St Anns Street property around 12.30pm on Friday.

​Officers from South Coast Police District established a crime scene around the area.

Investigations were centred on a townhouse which is part of a unit complex, with officers scouring the scene for hours.

Parts of St Anns Street and View Street were cordoned off as part of the crime scene.

A number of officers, detectives, general duties and scientific officers were at the scene most of the afternoon and well into the night.  Officers also questioned surrounding neighbours.

Local detectives assisted by officers from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad formed Strike Force Maximus to investigate the 63-year-old victim’s death.

Following inquiries, police arrested Close at Nowra Police Station around about 5.10pm on Sunday and charged him with murder.

Magistrate Gabriel Fleming formally refused bail and adjourned the matter until May 22.

Close also faces a series of other charges from separate matters including aggravated break and enter to commit a serious indictable offence, using an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence, prescribing a restricted substance, possessing a prohibited drug, damaging property, common assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and entering inclosed lands.
