Port Kembla’s newest food and live music venue hosted a evening of gypsy and folk music with wood fired pizza and fish and chips, something co-owner Warren Wheeler said was a great success.
“The turnout was incredible,” he said.
“It has a lot of potential, which we believe in, and so to that extent we’re putting our money where our mouth is.”
The former service station site on Wentworth Street has been re-purposed by a collective of 12 friends and acquaintances – all whom either work or live in Port Kembla – and are passionate about creating an all inclusive arts venue.
Wheeler said their number one goal was to bring something “positive and different” to the suburb, and greater Wollongong, with variety the main prerequisite for events.

“The purpose behind the venue is to provide a diverse program of food and entertainment, and that’s because we are a diverse community,” he said.
“We’re looking to foster unity through diversity.”
While they are waiting for their liquor licence the venue will operate under BYO to complement the changing mixture of entertainment and cuisine.
Local, national and international musicians spanning different genres have already been booked for future events, as well as an all female show to celebrate International Women’s Day on Thursday March 8.
Organiser of She’ll Be Right Malika Reese said the night would encompass comedians, a slam poet, a brass band, circus acts and storytellers with the intention to make it a regular event.
“Male and female comedy is sometimes quite different, so I wanted there to be a space where we women could comfortably explore our voices and our points of view,” Ms Reese said.
“Having run a variety show before, it made sense to me to bring together women from the very large pool of talent we have in Wollongong.”
Wheeler said they were using this month as a testing phase to tweak operations and iron out any kinks.
“Once the licence comes through we’ll be able to build from there. We have a handful of shows in March to help us find out feet, then we’ll be ramping it up from there,” he said.
“It’s all about creating a different type of night out. Something that is pokie free, you don’t have to worry about meat raffles.”
Current events are being promoted by the venue’s Facebook page with the Port in the Stom concert the biggest drawcard with eight different musicians performing on Sunday March 11 from 3pm.
