That’s why the Warrawong High School Intensive English Centre students jumped at the chance to do their bit to help people less fortunate.
So together with teachers they started to learn to knit on Harmony Day in March 2017.
During the year they have knitted squares to make two blankets which have recently been sent to women recovering in the Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia.
IEC learning support teacher Sue Benham said this hospital was started over 50 years ago by Australian doctor Catherine Hamlin.
“The students just felt really really thrilled to be able to make something for people less fortunate,” Ms Benham said.
“It was a long process and took about 10 months because many had to learn how to sew first. So it was an extraordinary achievement for them. The process of helping also lifted their spirits.”
